A supported internship is a structured work-based study programme for young people:-

  • aged 16 - 25
  • who have an Education Health & Care plan
  • and who want a job and help to do this

The aim is to support you to make a successful transition from education to employment.  Most of the learning takes place on the job with learning in class.

A job coach will match you with a suitable employer and then support you in the workplace.  They will break down tasks and help you to develop skills and confidence to be independent in your job.

A typical week for a supported intern might involve 2-3 days in the workplace with support from your Job Coach, and one day at your training provider, with your Tutor and with other supported interns.

A supported internship can run from 6 months up to one year.

Throughout the programme your Tutor, Job Coach and employer will be in regular contact to make sure that you have the right support to build the skills to do the job.

A supported intern can apply for Access to Work Grant to help you manage your work placement or help get to and from work.
