Year 9 Annual Reviews
Year 9 Annual Review - Preparing for Adulthood
It is expected that preparation for adulthood begins from year 9 in Annual Reviews.
Section 58 of The Care Act 2014 places a duty on local authorities to carry out an assessment of a child's care needs where this would be of 'significant benefit' to the child, and if it is likely they will have care and support needs when they turn 18.
The local authority has to provide support to enable you to plan ahead as your child approaches their 18th Birthday, so there are no gaps in services.
As part of your young person’s year 9 annual review you could highlight any new or ongoing care needs and that your young person may need an assessment of these in preparation for adulthood.
When a young person starts year 9, a SEND Careers Advisor will write to the young person to introduce themselves and offer advice on options. From year 10, your advisor will meet with the young person to explore options and paths they might take.
You can ask for a SEND Careers Advisor to attend the annual review to explore these options.
Parents and young people can contact them directly on SEND Careers Advice Service
You can read the Council for Disabled Children Preparing for Adulthood's Year 9 Annual Review Guide and Key topics to cover at annual reviews from year 9
