Last month 585 parent/carers and young people accessed our service which led to a total of 2,751 emails, contact forms, telephone calls and face to face meetings. Contact us if you need our advice and support.

A letter will be sent home to your parents/carers explaining;

  • the reason for the suspension
  • the number of days you will be excluded for
  • and the day of your return to school.

Will I be offered the chance to talk about what happened?

Yes, you should be given an opportunity to put forward your version of events.

We can support you with sharing your views with the school.

You will also be offered a meeting to discuss what happened and this will be a chance for you to share your views. You may also want to talk about any support to help you at school.

We can support at this meeting if you need help with this.

What happens if I get sent home to ‘cool off’?

The school must not send you home to cool off – this is called an unlawful exclusion.  Any exclusion, even for a short period of time, must be formally recorded by the school.

We can support you if you are worried about a suspension and we can talk you through what to do.

What happens if I get suspended from college?

Read our advice which can be found under section  Your guide to Suspensions and Permanent Exclusions

Also in this section:

Explaining the types of exclusion and advice and support around what you can do if you are suspended or permanently excluded from school or college

What to do if you are given a permanent exclusion

A permanent exclusion is where you are told you cannot come back to the school. This is also called being expelled.

What is an independent review panel?

If you do not agree with the decision of a governing board not to allow you to return to school, you can ask for an independent review panel to review the decision.
